Clark W. Dalton, K.C. Reception
The Clark W. Dalton, K.C. Reception is held at the annual meeting to honour the memory of
Clark Dalton, K.C., the former Project Coordinator of the ULCC.
Clark grew up and was educated in Alberta and received his LL.B. from the University of Manitoba, Robson Hall. After he graduated from law school, Clark moved to the Northwest Territories, to practice in Inuvik and Yellowknife. He was appointed as Director of Policy and Analysis by the Alberta Attorney General. His achievements were many and his network was extensive. Clark was a ULCC delegate from 1987 through 2004 and first attended as the National Coordinator for the ULCC Commercial Law Strategy in 2005. At the conclusion of that initiative, he took on the role of the ULCC’s Project Coordinator until early 2023.
Clark played many roles with the ULCC over his almost 40 years of involvement with the organization. While his primary focus was supporting the work of the Civil Section, he was devoted to the whole of the ULCC. He did not have a finite list of duties; he did whatever the ULCC needed and what he could contribute, and he did it with the utmost diplomacy and competence. He led from behind, and everyone associated with the ULCC benefitted from his efforts in ensuring the organization’s ongoing relevance to governments and the legal profession.
Clark was involved in everything from website renewal to constitutional and bylaw amendments, and he wrote a first draft on the history of the ULCC going back to its formation in 1918. There was no historical detail Clark could not trace; no precedent or policy he could not find.
Most importantly, Clark enjoyed the informal hallway chats, connecting with people on an informal basis and learning about their lives. Even better if he had a glass of wine in his hand.
Clark passed away in early 2023 and the inaugural Clark W. Dalton, K.C. Reception was held at the 2023 annual meeting.
